Help with Low Mood and Depression

Low Mood Can Feel Different for Everyone

We all have times when we feel low, fed up or less interested in things than usual. Often those feelings pass, but sometimes they persist and begin to affect everyday life.

Depression isn’t always experienced as sadness.

Some people feel exhausted, irritable or emotionally flat. Others find it increasingly difficult to concentrate, make decisions, get motivated or enjoy things they previously looked forward to.

Even ordinary tasks can start to feel like an enormous effort.

And when you’re feeling that way, being told to cheer up or think positively is rarely helpful.

When Low Mood Starts Affecting Everyday Life

You might notice yourself withdrawing from people, putting things off or losing confidence in your ability to cope.

Perhaps you’re constantly criticising yourself, expecting things to go wrong or feeling that nothing you do makes much difference.

For some people, low mood follows a difficult experience or prolonged period of stress. For others, there isn’t an obvious explanation.

There can be several contributing factors, including physical health, medication, life circumstances and psychological difficulties.

It’s important not to assume there’s one simple cause.

These experiences are not a diagnosis and can have different causes. Your GP can help you understand what is happening and discuss suitable support.

How I May Be Able to Help

Where appropriate, I may use cognitive therapy, hypnotherapy or BWRT alongside a client’s existing healthcare.

Cognitive therapy can help us look at unhelpful patterns of thinking, particularly where self-criticism, negative expectations or long-standing beliefs are making things more difficult.

BWRT may be useful when particular experiences or situations trigger unwanted emotional responses, anxiety or distress.

Hypnotherapy can sometimes help with relaxation, confidence and developing more helpful responses through imagery and suggestion.

Which approach we use depends on your individual circumstances.

The aim isn’t to pretend that everything is fine or suggest that depression can simply be talked away. It’s to identify particular difficulties we may be able to work on.

When you’re feeling low, even arranging an appointment can seem like a lot.

We’ll begin by talking about what’s been happening, how you’re managing and what you’d like to be different.

We can then decide whether my approach is suitable and what might be helpful.

There isn’t a set number of sessions, and you’re always involved in deciding how we proceed.

Some people come with a very specific difficulty they’d like to address. Others need time to understand what’s been contributing to how they feel.

We take things one session at a time.

There is no promise of a particular result or number of sessions. Decisions about medication remain with you and your prescribing clinician.

Do you suspect you may be depressed?

  • Do you lack interest in the things you used to enjoy?
  • Do you struggle to get out of bed in the morning, dreading a long exhausting day ahead?
  • Are you sleeping excessively or experiencing insomnia?
  • Are you having difficulty concentrating and experiencing brain fog?
  • Are you feeling worthless, helpless, and powerless?
  • Do you feel exhausted and overwhelmed?
  • Do you just feel empty and numb?
  • So you have feelings of low self worth?
These are just some of the signs that you might be experiencing depression. Depression can be extremely debilitating, Some people can suffer for years with depression and not even realise it, others suffer but don’t know how to help themselves. Most people experience low moods, irritability and feel miserable from time to time and these moods often pass quite quickly, within hours and days. However, if these moods are more frequent and long lasting they could be a sign you are experiencing depression.

Are You Avoiding Treatment

You may be avoiding seeking help because you’ve tried it in the past and it didn’t help or you feel so low and despondent, you just think “what’s the point.” Maybe you don’t feel comfortable talking about how you feel to anyone and don’t really believe talking will help anyway. Perhaps you think you may have to delve into the past, which you really do not want to do. There are many reason people don’t seek help for the relief of depression, it’s perfectly understandable, but why continue to suffer when you really don’t have to.

You’re not alone

Depression is a very common issue and can affect anyone. In fact, The Department of Health reported that in the UK alone it is expected that half of all women and a quarter of all men will suffer depression at some point in their lives. The World Health Organisation was recently quoted saying “depression will be second to heart disease as the leading cause of illness by 2020.

Depression can come on suddenly or slowly develop over weeks or months, and unfortunately, many people keep how they are feeling hidden from friends, family and work colleagues in the fear of being not understood, judged or rejected, leaving them feeling lonely and isolated.
